Co-Chair – Kevin Biderman
I’m Kevin, a Visiting Lecturer in CHS. I’ve met and spoken to many of you throughout my time in the branch, and I’ve tried to work as hard as I can to make sure your voice has been heard at every level of the College. This year I aim to work with the College to move VLs onto contracts of employment, gain a higher London Weighting, develop appropriate workload allocation for permanents staff, and will continue to create stronger ties with our sister unions in the college (Unite, IWGB and the SU)
Co-Chair – Nathan Francois
I’m a tutor on the Graduate Diploma in Art & Design. My main goal is to work with the Equalities reps, making sure that the RCA is transparent in their actions surrounding equality, equity and diversity and held accountable for all decision-making, as well as ensuring that permanent staff have their voices heard through the branch.
General Secretary – Ajay Hothi
I’m Ajay, I’ve been at the RCA for nearly eleven years as student and staff, first in Critical Writing in Art & Design, then as a VL in CHS. As General Secretary, I’ll work as your first point-of-contact for members and make sure that all administration and communications work smoothly and efficiently.
Co-Equality Officers – Tanveer Ahmed & Nina Trivedi
We are Nina and Tanveer, VLs in CHS and History of Design. Alongside providing guidance, advice, and support on equality and diversity issues for all branch members, we aim to work with the rest of the UCU branch in ensuring that the RCA works towards race equality. We urgently need to improve the working conditions and representation of RCA staff from BIPOC backgrounds throughout the college. To achieve this, we hope to use our roles to help amplify the voices of all RCA staff and encourage you to share your lived experiences of all forms of inequality in the workplace with us – we will be in touch and will work hard on your behalf towards exposing and addressing inequalities at the RCA.
Co-Members & Learning Officers – Ben Wiedel-Kaufmann & Cecilia Wee
We are Ben and Cecilia, and VLs in CHS and Visual Communication. We will work collaboratively in this role to ensure that the branch members’ base builds upon the great work we’ve already achieved and grows further into a strong, active, collective and campaigning force. We will organise and run campaigns, as well as build platforms for advocacy, particularly with practitioners from marginalised backgrounds.
Health & Safety Officer – Elisa Adami
I’m Elisa, I’ve been at the RCA since I started my PhD in 2014 and I’m now a VL in CHS. In the present moment, H&S is where many of the struggles for our livelihoods and equality play out. I promise to build a system of support for all workers, especially the vulnerable and those who have caring responsibilities, as well as creating cross-union alliances with all the workforce at the university.
Treasurer – Laura Gordon
I’m Laura, a VL in Visual Communication. I’ve been treasurer for the branch since the Four Fights strike in February, working as part of the fundraising team, administering the hardship fund, and working with UCU head office to manage budgets and put financial systems in place for the branch. I also work as the branch’s (unofficial) graphic designer.
